The researcher is going to implement a cross sectional study with a qualitative case study approach. The nurses will be females, ages 25-50 years old with 0-10 years of experience. The dependent variable will consist of a scale measuring negative impacts on the individual nurse from shift work. Four independent variables will be examined. They include age, experience vs. no experience, mandated vs. choice and napping. Ethical considerations end limitations of the study will be discussed further in this chapter.
Instrumentation
A questionnaire survey will be created. Permission will be requested from the professor and Central Michigan University school board. The interview questions that were asked of the nurse participants will be attached on Appendix C of this research paper. All of the participants were shift workers at the VA Hospital, Brooklyn campus. Permission was granted from the weekend/holidays/evening and night (WHEN) supervisors and also the unit managers. The survey questions were focused on the risks of shift work associated with chronic stress exposure. Questions asked on the survey were:
1. What is your age?
2. How many years have you worked this shift in nursing?
3. How many years …show more content…
Most nurses might not be honest with their answers therefore the results of the survey might be vague. The sample size is also a limitation for this study because only one hospital will participate in the study and the amount of shift work registered nurses is relatively small compared to bigger hospitals or a national hospital. Some nurses might not answer all the questions in the survey therefore; the results of the survey might be incorrect. Nurses might also be hesitant to answer the survey questions taking into consideration the risks of being seen by by-comers. The amount of years worked as a Registered Nurse will limit the results of this
