Racism: A System Of Oppression

Improved Essays
Twenty fourteen will be the year this is made clear to everyone: racism is not simply personal prejudice/bigotry that only manifests in the form of being unkind to someone on the basis of their skin color or calling them a derogatory name. Racism is a system of oppression, one that creates a society of first- and second-class citizens by denying rights and access to resources to non-white people. Racism is a system of power created by and maintained through public policy. Racist rhetoric or action is anything that reinforces/upholds that system. So until the day comes when the US government enacts laws aimed specifically and purposefully at ensuring that white people are shut out of education/healthcare/jobs/housing and shuttled into prison

In the article titled “Modern Racism”, Phil Fontaine challenges a nationalistic view most Canadians have of considering Canada an accommodating and tolerant society. These common myths he challenges include racism not existing in Canada and only bad people being racist. He identifies three types of racism that continue to affect Indigenous peoples and other minority groups in our contemporary society. These types include direct and blatant acts of racism, which is the type that would most likely come to mind when thinking about racism, indirect and subconscious racism, and systemic or institutional racism. The reality is that Canadian society is founded on racism through acts of settler colonialism, which is the physical act of taking land…

He directly calls out the Republican Party for ignoring undocumented works because it was in the best interest for their supporters to have cheap labor and the Democratic Party ignore it because they needed the votes. I am not sure if Trump is aware that undocumented immigrants tend to not go out to the ballot every two to four years. In this book Trump seemed to be more concerned with insulting and berating Latino immigrants than actually making a valid argument. He writes, “According to a Government Accountability Office 2011 report, America’s prisons house 351,000 criminal aliens who committed a crime after having already broken the law by entering America illegally.” He does this in an attempt to frighten the reader into thinking all undocumented people are 1) Latino and 2) Criminals.…

Racism has always been the most highly discussed issue in society. America continues to encounter and face many racial problems from the Civil Rights movement until now. Dalton Conley (2011) discusses Social Darwinism and how it was the notion that "some groups or races had evolved more than others and were better fit to survive and even rule other races". The cultural relativism should be promoted to help people understand that no race is superior or better than another. However, many believe that black people will never gain full equality in America regardless of the many improvements.…

Kenshin Siy 10B#29 PANDA [pandas are black, white and come from Asia] Racism is evident during the time of the American industrial revolution when slaves, who were mostly the African-Americans, would be forced to work either outside in fields picking cotton plants or inside factories for countless hours and be paid a single penny or even none at all. The blacks would work for long hours and be harshly beaten up if they fail to do their job properly. During this time, the whites would call the blacks "niggers" and even racially segregate them from the rest of the society. Also during the 17th/18th century through the transatlantic slave trades, colored people such as blacks would be sold to white people as slaves for one's…

The oppression that is cast upon the black community is the result of racism. Racism has been around since the time that two different races encountered one another. Being that both, oppression and racism, have been a problem for hundreds of years, they cannot be expected to go away in the matter of half of a century. In order for racism and black oppression to be nonexistent, children will have to be taught that they are equal no matter the color of their skin. It is not morally right for someone to be oppressed because they were born a certain skin tone.…

Racism may seem like it is a little problem that others have to deal with; however, it was a problem in the past and continuing to become even worse over a period of time. The reason why racism is a major problem for the United States today is because this has created hate crimes and racial prejudice towards the minority groups. It started in the seventeenth century, when Africans were kidnapped and brought to the United States…
