Sutton Hoo was located in Woodbridge, England, and it was discovered to be an Anglo-Saxon cemetery that dates from the 6th and 7th centuries AD. It was located on Edith Pretty’s estate, on a hill overlooking the River Deben, in Suffolk. Pretty had been curious about the mounds of earth located on her land, and she was not sure what they were. She decided to excavate the embankments on her otherwise flat property, and to her surprise, she discovered the archaeological treasures of Sutton Hoo. Sutton Hoo was thought to have been settled around 500 AD.…
The reports that came out of those excavations proved many of the ideas that MacNeish had proposed, as well as came with more information on the agricultural aspect of the people who had lived on the land. He also managed to determine that there were four main cultural periods and used carbon dating to determine more specific…
Different materials from the past can give historians and archaeologists a look into what the past was like in the places they were found. Although any pieces of evidence are valuable, some are more helpful than others to develop a better idea of the past than others. Physical evidence has been found in the Neolithic Era through Globeke Tepe, in Phoenicia through the shipwreck of Uluburun, and in Egypt through temples and mummies. Globeke Tepe is a structure that was built in the Neolithic Era. It is made up of a series of circular structures and is covered in complex carvings and features.…
For example, the report of Newton Horace analyzed verified that the Kensington Stone is real in 1910. According to Joseph, Frank. “Kensington Rune Stone Decoded: Vikings, Templars & Goths in America in 1362?.” P.n. Web. 2009. Newton Horace confirmed that the stone and its inscription are real, and the result of his test shown that stone was about 500 years old.…
“Naked Archaeologist” Simcha Jocobovici travels to Israel during his television show “The Naked Archaeologist” in order to gain insight on the holy lands, and to entertain those who want to learn about biblical times through archaeology. In episode 8, “Biblical Food,” Jocobovici travels to sites around Jerusalem in order to gain knowledge about the foods that were cooked and consumed during “Biblical times.” Throughout this episode, and through the other episodes, Jocobovici remains non-specific with the dates and locations of the sites that he was using to reference for him to make an accurate biblical dish. In episode 9, “Jesus: The Early Years,” Jocobovici uses both Bethlehems in Israel in order to build what life would have been like…
The article, Aging Aquifers by Valerie King states the importance of dating groundwater. King begins by stating dating aquifers can predict 50 years down the road. It is important to date groundwater to know the accessibility of water for future use. Dennehy states, “In very old groundwater, when you’re extracting water you should realize that water took a long time to get into that location, so it would take a long time to replace that water” (King 11).…
Were the Moon Landings real or faked? Were the “Moon Landings” real or were they fictional? Let’s find out, this issue is creating controversy between many Americans nowadays. I’m talking about the “Moon Landings” of 1969, you know that day when all the Americans turned on their televisions to watch this amazing accomplishment. These so called “Moon Landings” were during the time of the Vietnam War.…
Egypt The Egyptian outlook on perfumes could be derived from their lifestyle learned from the records, the objects found in connection to death and afterlife and mummified remains. The ancient Egyptians were concerned with the odours of everyday life and death. Dated to 1550 BCE, the Ebers papyrus gives us a wealth of knowledge on Egyptian medical preparations for ailments, perfumed anointing oils, and incense plants. As we move back through time, as early as the third millennium BCE, it becomes difficult to differentiate between the use of oils, scented oils, perfumes, and fragrances for spiritual or pharmacological purposes.…
The Description and Location of the Garden of Eden The Holman Bible Atlas describes the Garden of Eden as a well-watered place. A place of life giving water and fertile land where God made provisions for Adam and Eve. The Garden was full of many fruit bearing trees, one of which Adam was told not to eat of. Holman refers to the Genesis chapter 2 account when describing the river Euphrates that went out of Eden and was parted into four heads (rivers). The text offers three proposed locations for the Garden.…
There are also methods like carbon dating and absolute dating. Some people believe in the Bible which describes the earth being created but never mentions a time so no one knows how long ago it actually happened. Other people do not believe in the Bible and try to use scientific methods to uncover the time of the Earth's creation but one thing holds true between both is that dating can help uncover this secret but they are not the only ones. There are more ways to date fossils such as radiocarbon dating, carbon…
Just seeing how history fits together was extremely interesting because I had always looked at history as two time lines a biblical time line and a secular time line and I could never figure out just how they fit together. This includes how a lot of the genesis stories started in the fertile crescent of Mesopotamia and that that time is the same in both the Hebrew and secular time lines, for some reason I could never figure out of these “two” timelines fit together. For some reason today it seems like we separate these two although there only one part of the puzzle and understanding the time of the bible is almost as important as understanding the lessons within and you don’t get the whole story without it. Another example of this is how the…
Alternative archeological theories, ranging from ideas explaining Atlantis to Stonehenge, are both intriguing and rather creative. However, the validity of such claims can be discussed, argued and explored. Investigating how reputable these ideas actually are when compared to legitimate archeological evidence is rather interesting. Easter Island is often described as the most remote place on earth. It is an isolated volcanic island located in Polynesia whose native name is Rapa Nui.…
Forensic Carbon-14 Dating is a carbon dating system that is used to identify the age of unknown remains for anthropological and archaeological purposes. To help determine the year of death, Forensic Anthropologist use radiocarbon and inject them in to the soft tissues found inside the bone. Mainly soft tissues that are used for this advanced technology are found in hair, fingernails, and blood. The radiocarbon levels found in these three biological components give the most accurate time of post mortem due to these match identically to the contemporary…
How do you do this hundreds of years before it actually…
One method often used to date objects is radiocarbon dating, which works by comparing isotopes of carbon and their half-lives. This is an especially accurate method because it is unfazed by chemical, temperature, and physical changes so the timing will be correct no matter what. Another form of dating is using soil, sediment, or peat build-up. Since the build-up of these materials occurs in chronological order if undisturbed, it can show a timeline of objects and events. It can also show environmental events like fires to give an idea of what the climate might have been like and if there were any significant weather events.…
