As an English learner, I have experienced many challenges during the learning process, yet I haven’t given up my hope. Writing had always been one of my difficult challenges, but the desire inside of me learning new things always push me to accept the challenges. In fact, learning a new language stays always challenging to every person. However, English 111 class has taught me many things that I never thought I will do it. The first assignment that we did a reading response to Anne Lamott’s “Shitty First Draft” has taught me that people learn from their mistakes, and nobody is perfect. Lamott says, “Almost all good writing begins with terrible first efforts. You need to start somewhere. Start by getting something -- anything -- down on paper.”After reading this article I was encouraged to work hard on …show more content…
When it comes to writing an essay, I always hate and ignore because I didn’t know how to develop a paragraph. Moreover, I thought that reading and writing have completely a different task in writing an essay. However, after taking English 111, I come to know that reading and writing are equally important to form a beautiful essay. The fundamental knowledge I get in this class is that reading is important because it helps to create an argument and write an essay. Similarly, from English 111 class I learned lots of new things like creating an argument, writing rhetorical analysis essay and writing synthesis essay. The most unbelievable develops of me in this class was able to write seven paragraph essays. In addition, the new and wonderful things I learned in this class was logos, ethos, and pathos appeals, and using these appeals to create a beautiful understanding paragraph. Another improvement is my ability to point out multiple complexities within a text, instead of sticking to one-sided arguments in my papers. Furthermore, learning how to cite the sources in my writing and its

Anne Lamott’s article, “Shitty First Drafts”, talks about how every writer should start off by writing a shitty draft because from there you are able to produce even better drafts by figuring out what works and what does not. This reminded me of the dotline project we are doing in class because we had to prepare 15 thumbnail sketches and after getting feedback we created 15 more. From there we keep getting more feedback and improving our ideas until we finally get close to something worthy enough to be a final composition. I think the hardest part of this process for me is getting over my fear of producing something not pleasing enough. I need to focus more on getting my ideas down first and then perfecting it later.…

In Anne Lamott's "Shitty First Drafts", Anne talks about writing being something that is not rapturous and the only way she is able to actually produce something is by writing real shitty first drafts. In her drafts, she tries being descriptive and elaborative with her ideas and thoughts. They often end up being long, stupefying and, muddled up, but seem to have an overall good effect on her product. I really liked her quote on first drafts, "You need to start somewhere" and I completely agree with that; you need to take in a leap anyways. Unless we are willing to make the first effort and actually believe in what we're writing, it gets difficult to produce something vibrant, eloquent and, explanatory to the readers.…

Writing the first draft of a paper is definitely the most difficult part of the writing process for me. Perhaps, this is because pulling together a piece of writing out of thin air (or less seemly places) is not easy. Even as I type this one page response, I struggle to connect my thoughts and ideas in a cohesive and meaningful way. My writing process generally involves me thinking, over thinking, and then thinking some more, before anything even makes it past my fingertips. Writing badly on purpose is a dreadfully foreign concept, but that is precisely what Anne Lamott advises her readers to do in her excerpt “Shitty First Drafts”.…

Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…

They argue that there are five key principles that underlie the various critical approaches to teaching basic writers. These principles included assuming all students are capable of learning, engage students in student-centered work, address “higher order” issues alongside “lower-ordered” issues, integrate academic writing and reading instruction, and embrace the conflict between what they already know and what they need to learn (21). Mutnick and Lamos suggest that there are four major basic writer pedagogical approaches that go with theoretical changes since its conception. One of the four approaches is error centered, which is based on Shaughnessy’s theory of the logic of errors. They focus on the student’s errors he/she produces, view Standard Written English as “normative and neutral rather than ideological and culturally biased” and are still used to help students learn grammar conventions (22).…
