“In what other profession can you touch lives the way you can in the healthcare industry? You could help bring a new life into the world, or save a life from ending” (Santiago 1). I want to help make a difference in this world and I believe that being in the medical field is the perfect way to do so. For my senior project I volunteered at an assisted living facility, Royal Villa. During my volunteer time I job shadowed nurses and gained knowledge about the subject of nursing. The variety of jobs in the medical field are endless and there are many to chose from. I want this paper to help me gain knowledge about each and every aspect and job in the medical field. This is one of the more required, higher paying nursing job that you have to work for and go to school for. RN’s have a lot more responsibilities, duties, and patients to take care of. An RN’s responsibilities and duties are” working with a variety of patients, from pediatric to geriatric, or specializing in one of numerous possible areas such as neo-natal intensive care, cardiac care, neurologic care or dermatology, observing and recording patient behavior, consulting with physicians and other healthcare professionals, establishing treatment plans, operating medical equipment, supervising licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and certified nurse assistants (CNAs), performing diagnostic tests, Treating medical emergencies, such as heart attacks, strokes, car accidents and burns as well as recovering post-operative patients, and Administering medications and treatments. Nurses usually work in familiar healthcare facilities, but some can work in patients’ homes, schools, community centers or office environments. Travel nurses work where RNs are in short supply, either domestically or in foreign countries. Because of the nature of the job, many nurses can spend a great deal of time standing and walking, along with bending and lifting. Back stress is a professional hazard because RNs help lift and move patients and equipment. Nurses are also in close contact with patients who have infectious diseases and must follow strict guidelines and protocols to protect their own health. In hospitals and surgery centers, nursing schedules consist of rotating shifts to cover 24-hour patient care. The duration and number of shifts per week can vary according to the employer’s needs.
