Conquest and exploration had affected certain parts of the world in both positive and negative ways. In the Middle East when the Muslim Empire was just starting to expand, Muslim armies defeated the Byzantine forces and then “In the 711, Muslim forces crossed the Strait of Gibraltar and conquered Spain” (Esler 39). When one thinks of Detroit or Michigan in general, they automatically think of the musicians and sports teams that came from there; Madonna, Eminem, Kid Rock, The Tigers, The Lions, and The Red Wings. One assumes when someone talks about Detroit that they live there and give the person the utmost respect despite only visiting or living outside of the city. What caused Detroit's descent from a wealthy, vital city into one where "ruins" are common and the city is bankrupt? The lack of care and concern from the people who are in the charge of the city and its people. Despite all of these attractions, the city is still in ruins and is still in major debt.…

In “The Three Cities Within Toronto” by J. David Hulchanski, the author asserts that incomes in Toronto’s neighbourhoods and suburbs have become increasingly polarized since 1970 and can be understood as three distinct cities: city #1 comprises the relatively stagnant high-income core, city #2 is the shrinking middle income segment, dispersed throughout Toronto, and city #3 is the growing low income segment which surrounds the core. My field work in the Yonge and Wellesley area and beyond supports and builds upon Hulchanski’s findings; there is strong evidence of income polarization between the site in city #1 to city #2 demonstrated primarily through a change in retail form, decreased access to transportation, and the presence of immigrant…
