CANAVAN DISEASE Canavan Disease (or Canavan-Van Bogaert-Bertrand disease) is a rare inherited disorder that damages the ability of nerve cells (neurons) in the brain to send and receive messages. This condition is autosomal recessive, which means both copies of the gene in each cell have the mutation. The parents of a person with an autosomal recessive condition each carry one copy of the mutated gene, but they don't express having the genes. This disease affects the ability to walk, talk, and sometimes even see. It is most commonly found in the Ashkenazi Jew population. Although symptoms sometimes do not show until 3-5 months of age, the symptoms of the disease usually range from abnormal posture
