The Waldorf-Astoria was originally two hotels on Fifth Avenue 35th Street, where the Empire State Building now stands. William Waldorf Astor an American businessman made “The Waldorf” Hotel at 1893 standing at 13 stories high. The wealthy Astor family did not like each other and so at 1897, William Waldorf cousin’s John Jacob Astor IV opened the 17-story “The Astoria” Hotel. The two hotels competed against others until 1929 where it was demolished and made into the Empire State Building. During the time of the “The Waldorf’ and “The Astoria Hotel” an alleyway separated the two hotels and the guest from each hotel will meet each other in the alley way to tease about how fantastic their stay and day was. The hotel is separated into the main Waldorf hotel and the Tower hotel. The Tower hotel provides a more enhance experience which is from the 28th floor to 42nd floor. The Tower hotel has its own private entrance, front desk, and security. Every president since Herbert Hoover has stayed at the Tower on 42A. The hotel itself is the host to the world, to a lot of royalties, and celebrities. It is known as the home away from home. The hotel marks the first to have elevators, room services, residential housings in hotels, air conditioning, and first major hotel to hire women chefs. Also the first Japanese fine dining restaurant in midtown, called Inagiku operated at the Waldorf-Astoria from 1974 to 2008. The hotel now has three main restaurants the Peacock Alley, The Bull and Bear Steak House, and Oscar's Brasserie. The hotel marks a significant for the culinary industry, where Oscar Tschirky, the maître d'hôtel of Waldorf-Astoria invented the famous Waldorf salad and egg benedicts.
