Residential schools were made to kill the Indian in the child claiming to make Canada a better place. The Government of Canada thought that the residential schools would help the Native families, but the way the children were treated and kept at the schools the Aboriginal culture is still suffering from the violence and abuse. Aboriginal parents don’t know how to treat their children because of their experience from Residential Schools; the violence was passed on through the generation and is still being passed on. There are many homeless Aboriginal people on the street who are facing alcohol and suicide problems in their families.

A report was done by the University Of Manitoba and the results they got were shocking “75 per cent of the case files for a sample of Aboriginal residential school survivors contained mental health information with the most common mental health diagnoses being post-traumatic stress disorder, substance abuse disorder and major depression.”(Lee, Michael 2014). Some of the survivors of Residential Schools found it hard to cope with the pain that they received in Schools so they turned to drugs and alcohol in 2002/03 there were about 70% of First Nation families who had faced alcohol consumption problems that are being passed down through the generations of aboriginal families. Many Aboriginals found it difficult to adapt to the Native community so they left their reserves and moved into the cities in 2015 there were 20 – 50% of Aboriginal people out of all the homeless people that live on the street today in Canada. "Sexual and physical abuse, as well as separation from families and communities, caused lasting trauma for many others. The effects of this trauma were often passed on to the children of the residential school Survivors and sometimes to their grandchildren" (PressProgress 2015).
