Since this war was one that took over the course of such a long period of time it is impossible to see how the two countries compared to each other in many different aspects. When it came to fighting a war against each other the economies of both countries should be taken into account “there were some 12,000,000 inhabitants-since the merits of Capetian government, its peace and security, had far outweighed its defects.Trade and agriculture flourished, and the extent and the burdens of serfdom were much reduced.”(Previté-Orton pg 876) “for England at most had a quarter of France’s population”(Previté-Orton pg 876); so France was a must more powerful country when you just look at it from just their economies. But when two countries go to war against each other you have to look at the militaries of each country to help evaluate each of their strength. Even though France was wealthier than England their military was lacking; “For war he relied on the feudal chivalry, coming largely for pay, the legal knight’s and other services being commonly commuted for money, but although paid, neither mailed horsemen nor mercenary foot had advanced in military tactics since the last century.”(Previté-Orton pg 876) . On the other hand while England might have a smaller population there military was a professional one with veterans from prior
