Drawing Is Just Like Being Able To Speak
Rules is a novel written by an author named Cynthia Lord. There is a girl named Catherine and she is twelve years old. Catherine has an autistic brother, named David. Catherine frequently makes up rules for David. Catherine, David and her mom, they go The Occupational Therapy Clinic for David where Catherine meets a boy named Jason. Catherine draws Jason because she was bored at The Occupational Therapy, but Jason does not like when people to stared at him. Later in the story Catherine and Jason become friends and Catherine even draws him words with an illustration. Finally, the new neighbor, Kristi, comes over to visit Catherine which they also become friends. …show more content…
Catherine is a unique girl who likes to draw, read, swim, and loves her two guinea pigs. Catherine is a sweet person because she loves her brother even though sometimes she thinks David is an obstacle for her. For example, “ I know but it 's hard enough to make new friends without worrying he 'll do something embarrassing” (60). When Kristi the new neighbor went to Catherine 's house, Catherine was afraid of David somehow ruin their friendship. Catherine is scared to be judged by others because of her brother. Catherine is patient with Jason because she has experience with her brother discrimination to disabled people. She has helped Jason to come out of his shell. For example, when the mom tells Catherine that Jason wanted to do things by himself that was the reason why Jason 's parents bought him an electric wheelchair. Catherine worked hard to make the words for Jason but she did it with love and patience. In the movie Rory O 'Shea Was Were, is similar to the novel Rules because Catherine and Rory both have a gift of understanding what friendship is all about.
