Sacrifice In The Necklace And The Gift Of The Magi

Throughout many pieces of literature, one may evaluate several themes from a story. These themes may range from love, to heroism, to something completely different. In the stories “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant and “The Gift of the Magi” by O.Henry, several different themes are able to be named. However, both stories share one common theme, that being sacrifice. Not only did characters in both stories sacrifice their own happiness because they wanted other people to be happy, but they also did so because they knew it was the right thing to do. In “The Necklace” and “The Gift of the Magi”, it is able to be seen that both stories share the same theme of sacrifice due to the fact that the characters were willing to give up their own happiness for the benefit of others.

In an attempt to please her, one day her husband came home with an invitation to go to the palace. Instead of being ecstatic, she was disappointed as she thought she had nothing nice to wear, particularly a fine piece of jewelry. So, as a result, she borrowed a necklace of diamonds from her friend, Mine. Forestier. However, at the end of the evening at the palace, Mine. Loisel encountered a difficult situation that is described with, “I have-I’ve lost Mme. Forestier’s necklace” (Maupassant). This portrays the tragedy that happened to Mine. Loisel, which was she lost Mme. Forestiers prized necklace. As a result of losing the necklace, she and her husband decided to buy a new one for thirty six thousand francs, which was money they had to borrow as a loan. The aftermath of having to take out such a large loan is shown with, “She came to know what heavy housework meant. They dismissed their servant; changed their lodgings. She washed the dishes, dirty linen, shirts, and the dish cloths. And, dressed like a woman of the people, she went to the fruiterer, the grocer, bargaining, insulted, defending her miserable money sou by sou. And this life lasted ten years” (Maupassant).
