Scarlet Pimpernell Character Analysis

Rebecca Hall claimed that “It’s not often you get female characters who don’t fit into a box.” This could be accurate in other literatures,but in the classic literature Scarlet Pimpernel, this is not a relatable to the female characters. Baroness Orczy developed female characters who can’t be imprisoned into a box. The comtesse and Lady Marguerite Blakeney are strong individuals who each contribute just as much or even more than the male roles. Their maternal qualities display a whole different fascinating point of view in this classic literature.
Comtesse is a thoughtful woman that adds a sense of fascination to the story. Comtesse is seen as a thoughtful woman because as soon as she got to safety all she talked about was wanting to make sure her husband was okay. She exclaims “He is in such deadly

When she pays for a homeless man’s meal it shows a trait of compassion and kindness. Once one of the men taunt and make fun of the man for being blind and homeless Marguerite interferes and says “Let the poor man be-and give him some supper at my expense” (9). This illustrates that although Marguerite has yet to show her husband compassion she finds kindness within her to help someone else who is at a lower position in life than her. Other people may believe Marguerite is cruel because of how she talks to the comtesse. However, people who think this are simply not looking deep enough into the reasons behind Marguerite’s actions. Marguerite simply tries not to show how the harsh comments from the Comtesse affected her; although, it is noticed that she was hurt by the comments when it stated “The laugh which accompanied this sally sounded perhaps a trifled forced and hard” (11). After the author drops this big clue it is understood that she is a kind woman who is just not allowing to let others view her sensitive
