If we compare both author’s writing style in these two splendid essays, there are a lot of difference between them. Nonetheless, that does not mean there are no similarities.
First, we have the narrator’s first person point of view in both essays. Secondly, in both essays we can see their emotions and their opinion of what is happening. Thirdly, A
Modest Proposal and Shooting an Elephant were specifically written to critique the society at their moment that they were written. This is unique because they were written and published with a huge time gap in between but still they criticize almost the same society.
Considering this, the time that they were living on made them write the essays the way they did. Moreover, they did have their own tone for narrating their essay. For example, throughout A Modest Proposal we can see the irony of it, because the essay is a complete satire. In the contrary, Orwell’s tone in Shooting an Elephant is informal and friendly, which helps the reader to follow him through the whole essay. Now, each essay with its own conflict can help us understand this change in society. Swift, who wrote A Modest Proposal at the 1700s, criticized the wealthy people through a “modest proposal” in which he mentions that eating babies could be a solution to the economics issues at the time. Thus, he goes directly to insult the economics and unfairness of the society that he was living in. On the other hand,
Orwell intentions were not to insult or make fun of society, instead he decided to give a moral message through an anecdote of a past personal experience that he had. A story that he narrates, is about this elephant that goes berserks and destroys somethings and buildings in a community and also killing a person. Therefore, he decided to look for the elephant and kill him. Nevertheless, when Orwell finally found the elephant with a group of people that had followed him, he hesitated for a moment because he was not berserk anymore, he was peacefully eating. However, thanks to him over thinking of what people would think if he did not kill the elephant, he finally decided to do so. Finally, after
