Should Transgender Athletes Be Allowed To Participation In Sports Essay

In recent years, the issue concerning transgender athletes being allowed to choose the teams they would like to play on has become an increasing problem. Our generation was never truly aware of how big of a problem this was to the transgender community until just recently when Caitlyn Jenner (formerly Bruce Jenner) came out as transgender and addressed the problem in her speech at the ESPYS. This really open our eyes and even infuriated some people, therefore, I believe that there needs to be rules put in place concerning the participation of transgender athletes on a team that is not the same gender as their biologically assigned gender. Transgender athletes should be permitted to play on the team of their choice after agreeing to strict rules and requirements. Currently, every student athlete is protected under Title IX, however the same cannot be said for Olympic athletes. According to Title IX "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." Time magazine writer, Katy Steinmetz,mentions in her article, The Case for Allowing Transgender Athletes in Youth Sports, written in July of last year that “the Olympics and ninth-grade basketball need to be considered separately.” With consideration to the effort put forth and the rewards received, there is no way one could make a single rule to cover all of the transgender athletes in the entire world. It is simply just not possible for such a small blanket of rules to cover such a wide variety of transgender athletes. For this reason specifically, I believe that there should be a set of rules for each level of competition in sports ranging from elementary and middle school to the
