The movie Silver Linings Playbook, was released in 2012 and was written and directed by David O. Russell. In this movie, there are many things that can be analyzed. This movie falls under the genres of comedy, drama, and romance. It was also based off of the book The Silver Linings Playbook, which was written by Matthew Quick. The entire movie is filled with beautiful moments that engage the audience to look at the world and the people within it a little differently. Both of them are suffering from mental illness because of it. The writer of this movie used the artistic appeal of pathos to help the audience feel for these characters. The audience can connect with these characters even though they do not know what they are going through. There is this stigma surrounding mental illness that this scene and entire movie tries to shed light on. This scene starts off like any normal conversation, and then progresses into an emotional argument. Tiffany understands Pat more than anyone else. The audience knows this, but Pat cannot come to this conclusion. While they are talking Tiffany says the words, “sort of like me,” which is insinuating that her and Pat are alike. Pat gets angry at this because he does not want to be associated with her. He thinks that her mental illness and the way she behaves would be looked down upon by his ex-wife. The audience can see the confusion on his face as he tries to understand why he would be like her. Pathos comes into play because the audience feels sad for the characters as they are struggling to understand each other. The hurt that Tiffany feels can be shown in her outburst. It is her cracking point where she can not handle being judged by another person. This scene makes people feel emotions like worry, sadness, and anger. There are these two people who have had hardships in their lives, and it deeply affected them. They are considered to be mentally ill and many people do not always look at them as “normal.” However, they are the most alive people in the world. They see the world differently, and they do not care what people think of them. Tiffany and Pat are able to draw strength from each other because they can see what is inside. In this scene, the audience first thinks that they are seeing a mental breakdown, but if they look further they can see so much more. They see Tiffany’s compassion for Pat even though he just insulted and judged her. He said hurtful things and denied who he is, but when he was in trouble she helped him. Not everyone would have the heart to do that, but she did. This scene shows two people who are just like us. Everyone has their issues; some are just better at hiding
