Slave codes were law in each of the United States defining the status of slaves and the rights of the masters. The title was a reference to the headings given to runaway slaves attempting to achieve the Northern states and Canada. A previous slave named Harriet Tubman, nee Harriet Ross, was effectively driving slaves to flexibility.
