Many people may believe that dance is a fairly safe sport; however, dance leads to many injuries. Dance is hard on the body, and puts stress on every joint, bone, and muscle. If there is not proper training, an injury is more likely to occur. Also, if steps are executed incorrectly, injuries may commonly happen. It is very crucial to execute every step correctly. Snapping hip syndrome is a common injury found in dancers. Snapping hip syndrome is what the name sounds like. Snapping hip syndrome is when the hips pop or make a snapping sound when the leg is lifted, lowered, or swung with force to the front, back, or side of the body. This condition makes it hard to do typical everyday activities such as standing up from a chair, walking, or running. When the popping occurs in the front, it is caused because the hip flexor rolls over the hip bone, or the popping occurs because the hip ligaments roll over the thigh bone or tissues of the hip. Patellofemoral pain syndrome is a broad term for pain in the front of the knee or in the patella, also known as the kneecap. This injury is also called runner’s or jumper’s knees, but can be found in nonathletes. Patellofemoral pain syndrome is common in dancers because dancers do a lot of jumping. This pain is caused when nerves sense pain in the soft tissues or in bones around the patella. This pain will also make it hard to do everyday activities. Improper alignment of the kneecaps can also cause this pain. Usually, this pain is caused by the following: overuse, improper training, or change in footwear, such as going from flats to pointe shoes. Also, patellofemoral pain syndrome is caused when the calfs and quads are not as strong as they should be. So, this puts a lot of weight on the knees.
