Social Distortion's Song I Wasn T Born To Follow

I would like to entertain you with a very symbolic song (to me at least). This song may not be the most elegant or the most well known. Being written by an old punk rock band, they aren't exactly known for being a tear dropper. No, this song is a fist raiser. Social Distortion's "I Wasn't Born To Follow" is the song strong enough to push a generation to change the world. I know it's helped to change mine.

The first part of the song was really the part to catch my attention. "When I grow up, I'm gonna be a star. I'm gonna sing my songs and play my guitar. I'm ready." It really represents where I am now and what I hope to be true in the future. Now, I don't necessarily want to be a singer in a band. Stand-up comedy is more my speed, but the

This song was a protest song in the civil rights movement era and became a famous anthem for the African-American civil rights movement. I found this especially relevant when all of the black men were confessing to the murder and claiming that is was because of all of the hardships they and their family members had suffered because of their skin color. 3. “Fire” by…

There is always an immense amount of pressure to conform and to not be different, making sure to stay with the current “style” along the way. In the novelette, Anthem by Ayn Rand everyone in society is exactly the same and follow a certain set of rules very strictly. While, in the song “It’s Still Rock And Roll To Me” by Billy Joel, he sings about the the pressure he is given for being different. I, as a listener, can relate to this due to the fact that there is pressure towards me, from family and friends, to join a sport or another activity, which I do not want to do as I enjoy other things. This song, from Billy Joel, is the sole definition of individuality, and I, as a listener, follow that definition, and do as is needed for me to enjoy…

The first song I picked is “We shall overcome” from Pete Seeger. The song is originally not from him, but was associated with the American folk singer after using it as a song of protest during the Civil Right Movement. The song became an anthem for the movement; because the melody is simple but contains lyrics that can speak to many, the song is a battle cry for any group that would face adversity. In fact, the song is still recorded today in support of diverse causes. Sunday Bloody Sunday from U2 is also another powerful protest song.…

When I think of The Wombats, I think of odd-but-fun lyrics and upbeat, borderline psychedelic music, and the band's latest album, "Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life," provides just that. The first song on the album, "Cheetah Tongue," was pre-released as a single. The song itself is pretty simple, but the lyrics are very visual.…

A song that speaks to me is “Warrior” by Demi Lovato. This is a song I listen to when I need a reminder that I am strong. I’ve had an ongoing battle with mental health issues and so has Demi Lovato. When I listen to this song I relate to her because she knows the struggle of mental illness and she writes from her heart. In her song she writes, “ I am a survivor in more ways than you know”, this reminds me that even though I have had a rough path I can still be more than a victim.…

Recognize what's going on, take a stand for yourself, and make the changes to better your world.' I believe that only through conscious effort and armed with knowledge can we make changes to how society thinks, a generation at a time. I wish more young women in the current generation could hear this song like I did, at the height of my becoming a knowledgeable young adult. I think it could help women in other countries, who are just now starting to shed the manacles of their societies and saying they are just as capable as men are. It should be one of the anthems of strong, young women like Malala Yousafzai as she fights for the rights of Muslim girls to go to school; or the young 11-year old Yemeni girl that ran away to escape an arranged marriage.…

David Bowie was an androgynous musician who had several songs that had deep symbolism. For example his song “Life on Mars” which was released in 1971 along with the Hunky Dory Album, but it took off when he embraced his Ziggy Stardust persona. The song is dedicated to an era of rebellion against materialism and escapism through entertainment such as movies and shows. Most of all, the song is dedicated to a time in which media was focused on all of the violence and acts of resistance. The entertainment sector was exploiting workers, popular media, feeding off all of the drama from daily occurrences.…

Furthermore, I believe this song can help represent me due to the fact that I still think about others when I have an insignificant problem. I live in Canada, an affluent, developed, and free country, unlike other individuals who are required to live in war torn, and poverty-stricken countries, who tend to be much less fortunate. There are third world problems that billions of people face, but then there are first world problems that people in North America face, including me, like losing a pair of headphones. There is a drastic difference regarding the importance of the two adversities. Jackson wants individuals that are blessed to live in a developed country, to assist those that are struggling, such as children in an African country.…

The final song that I am using for this assignment is "I'm Good" by The Mowgli's. The lyrics of this song outlines the happiness and joy that should be appreciated in life. The song also talks about making the most out of life, and also explains the meaning of self-acceptance. It talks about how we should remember who we are and forget about what others think about us; caring about others' opinions make us less happier. Therefore, I personally connect with "I'm Good" because it describes the themes of self-acceptance and living life to the…
