The diagram to the left, called In Emerging and Developing Nations, Internet Users on Social Networks, shows percentages of different countries and whether or not the citizens that use the Internet, use it for social networking. At the bottom is the median of both No, 18%, and Yes, 82%. Many organizations use the internet to teach information. One organization is Doctors Without Borders, they keep in contact with physicians who need help performing International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) has done multiple projects to help promote social networking as a way for rural and uninformed citizens to communicate with their governments. In the article called ‘Harnessing the Powers of Social Media’, by ICFJ it was said that “interactive voice response technology (IVR) and mobile phones…provide a two-way news service to indigenous rural people in India.” ICFJ has record of twenty-nine instances where citizens have gone further, challenging officials and commanding action. According to The Atlantic, in their article How social Media Could Revolutionize Third-World Cities, “[n]etworking technologies are about to make governments more accountable and transparent.” The example given was that in Mexico, a housewife was tired of the poor lighting in her local park, so she complained to the mayor on Twitter. The mayor saw the tweet and was able to start the installment of new lights in the park in a very timely matter. He even posted pictures of the installment and thanked the housewife for bring the issue to his notice. This shows a political situation that makes the citizen’s life significantly
