"Tainted Love Or Tainted Music"
Musician, songwriter, and record producer of the 50's and 60's Ed Cobb wrote the memorable song "Tainted Love" in 1964. Cobb's profession of musician and songwriter has been marked as a renowned songwriter of his time. Cobb played in the band the Four Preps and wrote for several famous musical artists like the Standells, Fleetwood Mac, and Pink Floyd, just to name a few. The talents of Cobb's work has boosted musicians fame with the enjoyment of his lyrics. His hard efforts and talents can be reflected by 32 gold and platinum awards, as well as being nominated for 3 Grammy Awards. They only changed a couple of verses of the song to mold and make a better connection with their genre. Giving this song a musical makeover Marc Almond, lead singer of Soft Cell, slows the rhythm and the tone has a lower pitch compared to Gloria Jones original. As he sings he gives the lyrics a slight bit of "gusto", and adds a little bit of anger in the tone, by the way, he has been treated in this love relationship. The lyrics change in the third verse towards the end, "And you'll think love is to pray/ but I'm sorry I don't pray that way" as Marc proclaims to make that the relationship they had was only about sex vs. Gloria Jones third verse of the song "And who'll think love is to play/ but well I'm sorry I don't pray that way" defining that sex was not as good for her as it was for him. The two verses compared to each other Marc Almond makes it sound better by the way he changes the words giving this verse a smoother transition between words. The same changes are made closer to the end of the song as Gloria sings "I love you/ I hurt me so/ I do not pack my things and go" her meaning is unclear, but she says to her lover that if she stays she will just be hurt over again being miserable in the relationship if she does not leave. "A girl group of dance ensemble" reworks Ed's song in 2006 into a sassy rendition of the confused feeling of trying to get back with their lover. It seems in this sexier version of "Tainted Love" keeping the verses close to the same of Soft Cells lyrical version. The drawn-out melody of The Pussycat Dolls gives it a softer and a bit naughty tone through the song. As the female singers take turns describing their need for ending this "tainted love" also add an alternate ending to this song which gives this song a twist. The alternate end is not one of their own or belonging to Cobb's but from another song that came from the 60's,"Where did our Love Go" sang by The Supremes. This alternate ending gives this song a spin of a different meaning to Ed Cobb's "Tainted Love." Realizing that lust has gotten the better of themselves they go back to their lover to find he himself has moved on, noticeable at the end of the song, when using verses of The Supremes "You will not want to leave/ Ohh, you want to meet me, baby, baby/ where did our love go?/ Ohh, Don't you want me?" then the song fades away. The Pussycat dolls used a clever way in blending these two old classic songs into a whole new way perceiving this once break up song to let's get back together song.
