Stomayor Speech Analysis

Sonia Sotomayor, a judge, in her speech Opening Statement to The Senate Judiciary Committee, describes her past and her accomplishments such as all of her experience being a judge and her nomination into the supreme court by president Obama. She writes about her experiences and shares her accomplishments so that her audience sees why she is a good candidate to be in the supreme court. Sotomayor’s purpose is to persuade and seek the support of the judges and America for her election into the supreme court. She supports her purpose with rhetorical appeals such as ethos and pathos. Sotomayor states “I poured myself into my studies at Cardinal Spellman High school, earning scholarships to Princeton University and the Yale Law School…” Based on this evidence one can infer that Sotomayor achieves greater credibility by explaining how hard she worked to be so successful; also, she explains this by not only stating that she put so much effort into her work but by proving her statement by explaining how she received scholarships to Princeton University and Yale Law school. Yale Law school is the number one Law school in the country and Princeton is ranked number one in National Universities. Sotomayor was not an average student, nor did she put a little bit of effort into her work; moreover, she was such an outstanding student that two of the most prestigious colleges in the country chose Sotomayor out of millions of other applicants to receive scholarships. This makes Sotomayor more credible because it shows how she knows and learned about being a judge really well, and how she learned about the law really well making her a great candidate for the justice supreme court. In Sotomayor’s view, she states that, “Over the past three decades, I have seen our judicial system from a number of different perspectives: as a big-city prosecutor, as a corporate litigator, as a trial judge, and as an appellate judge.” This shows that if Sotomayor is elected into the supreme court she has already had a lot of experience and has seen the judicial system from multiple perspectives such as a big-city prosecutor, corporate litigator, a trial judge, and as an appellate judge.
