Since people have been spending a significant amount of time online, it impacts their conversations in reality. This has been noticed among many ages, one article in particular notices it amongst college students. “Stop Googling, Let’s Talk” is an article from the New York Times Sunday review. It goes into depth about how we are all being effected by social media and other forms of technology. Sherry Turkle, the author of this piece states the value of having a conversation that’s not on a screen. “…It is in this type of conversation — where we learn to make eye contact, to become aware of another person’s posture and tone, to comfort one another and respectfully challenge one another — that empathy and intimacy flourish. With the dramatic increase in social media use, it’s becoming more common for children to get bullied electronically. Studies show that 42% of teenagers have been cyberbullied in the past year. Even though the harm done to kids is not in person, it still has the same impact when the bully is behind the computer. Social media gives the bullies the opportunity to strike from several different angles because of this technology.
