Apparently, there were seasons when there was too much work, and one would easily find employment, and there were others when one would hardly find any. The author is quick to note that there was so much less work that employers were laying off their employees meaning that Dick’s dream of owning a counting room were most likely not to come true. This part of the story shows that even if Dick had wished to have his counting room, he probably would have had no clients. The other of the children was a girl, but it is a boy who was too adventurous to the extent of dropping. Prior to the paragraph where the boy falls off the ferry, the author notes that Dick liked going on excursions when he was not working. It may seem coincidental that at around the same time, a boy falls off the boat.
