Roy Hobbs deserves to win the game so that he will get a better future. In the novel, Malamud failed Roy because he wants to claim that Roy never learn from his mistakes. However, during the game, Roy does learn from his mistake. During the game, between the fifth and the sixth inning, Roy realizes his mistake of selling the team for his own good. He realizes that he in indebted to Pop. Malamud illustrates in the novel, “He stole a look back at Pop and the manager was muttering to himself out of loose lips in a bony face. It seemed to Roy he had known the old man all his life long” (216). Roy knows that he needs to win the game for Pop Fisher so that he got back his 10 percent of the shares that has been conquered by the Judge, a greedy person. He needs to win the pennant as Pop did helped him and put him to play even though before that he benched Roy for three months. Pop Fisher has faith in Roy Hobbs – Roy is the only player that cam make the team win for him. “I say we can win it whichever way you feel. Once you begin to play you will feel stronger. During the climactic game, Roy hit the ball to Otto Zip to show his dissatisfaction on him because he keeps on make him down instead of cheer him up. Unexpectedly, one of the ball hits Iris Lemon who sits just behind Otto Zip. Iris Lemon tells Roy that she is pregnant of Roy’s son. Roy seems to get a new spirit – a force life – when he knows he has a commitment as a dad to his unborn child and a husband to the true woman, Iris Lemon. He needs a better future to support his family. The readers are very guarantee that Roy Hobbs could win the game depends on the scene by scene that shows a hope for the Knights to win the pennant this time since the past 25 years. Iris Lemon herself repeat the words “You must win, Roy” for 4 times shows that Roy really needs to win. He really needs to strike out for the sake of Iris and his son. Roy replies that he will do it. He finally realizes that Iris Lemon is a right woman for him instead of Memo. He knows that he will never get Memo. He finally opens his eyes widely. After the game, he meets Gus and the Judge to return the money and Memo is there. Memo tries to shoot him; however, she fails to do so. This is a symbolic that Roy really learns from his mistakes compare to 16 years ago that he got shot by Harriet Bird. Even though it is consider as too late, he still realizes his mistakes.
