Supernova Research Paper

Jonathan Hatch walked down the tree-lined road from his home in Valdosta, Georgia while his mind ran through his normal checklist creation for the day.
One. Write that email to the Dean of Student Affairs about the lack of student involvement in the astronomy club and create a case for funding even though only 4 students attend regularly. Two. Get with Casey, his TA Graduate student. The quizzes from the last Friday need to be graded yesterday and are starting to collect dust. John also needs to check on her research about the sited supernova that occurred in the LMC dwarf galaxy 10 days ago.
Angered and upset, John was still irked that he was observing the LMC not more than 3 weeks ago, and as soon as he turned his attention elsewhere, the supernova burst into its glorious radiance.

It was the closest supernova to the earth from an “outside” galaxy in recorded history and it also wound up to be the most powerful one ever seen. Shining 700 billion times the brightness of our sun. and about 25 times brighter than all the stars in the Milky Way galaxy combined, it was visible to the naked eye. This astronomical spectacle caused quite a stir globally. Large gatherings of people took to the streets and fields and churches every night looking for the second coming of Jesus while others dancing around Stonehenge. Academic studies of the event will be studied for quite some time in both the hard and social sciences.
Angered and annoyed, John can only corroborate the event and do what many of his peers consider to be side science. John let out an audible sigh. “That should have been my sighting!” he let slip out under his breath. Closing his eyes and stopping his walk, he purposely slowed his breathing. Calming himself down, he was able to regain his composure and continue with his to do

On September 6, the sun let its presence be felt by unleashing two massive solar flares. The first eruption, classified as an X2.2 flare, the strongest since 2008, occurred at 5:10 a.m. ET. Shortly after, at 8:02 a.m ET, the star spewed out a bigger, and more dramatic, X9.3 flare — the strongest on record since December 2006. Solar flares, or storms, beginning with an explosion usually above a sunspot, the area where strong magnetic fields poke through the sun's surface. When these spots become unstable, they erupt, releasing significant amounts of energy.…

SUPERGIANT STAR Supergiants are among the most luminous and massive stars, ranging between 7-10 solar masses and can range in brightness from thirty thousand to hundreds of thousands the output of our sun. They reside in the top region of the Hertzsprung-Russel diagram; having temperatures from 3,500k to over 20,000k and having bolometric absolute magnitudes between -5 and-12. Supergiants are massive enough to begin burning helium gently in their core before it becomes degenerate, and without the strong dredge-ups that lower-mass stars experience. They are able to go on successfully igniting heavier elements, usually all the way to iron. These stars are classified into 2 specific groups; red and blue supergiants.…

The goals of this lab are to observe the constellations in the night sky. We are to us the internet or any other resources of our choice to research the history of the constellations. I decided to do research over Libra, which means the Scales or Balance. It is also one of my favorite constellations because it is also my zodiac sign. Libra has three really bright stars and they are Alpha Librae, Beta Librae, and Gamma Librae.…

Andrew Stephens Mr. Hamed Pour-Imani ASTR 2001L 4 August 2016 Night Lab Report On July 15 our astronomy lab met on the roof of Kimpel Hall to observe several objects in our night’s sky. Using a 10-inch diameter telescope we were lucky enough to have a mostly clear sky to view in this order: Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and the Moon. Viewing these celestial bodies in person is truly one of the most exciting and core tenets of astronomy. With our telescope we were able to see firsthand and notice some of the distinct characteristics of the different objects.…

commonly known as the rayed earthstar, is an inedible species of mushroom belonging to the genus Geastrum, the earthstar fungi. First described by Christian Hendrik Persoon in 1794, it is a cosmopolitan but uncommon species found in Europe, the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Australasia. The fungus feeds off decomposing organic matter in the litter and soil of coniferous forests. The small, grayish-brown fruit bodies are enclosed by a skin, or peridium, made up of four layers of tissue. The outer layer splits to form star-like rays and expose a spore case, inside of which is the gleba—fertile spore-producing tissue.…

Solar flares occur as a result of the build-up of magnetic energy inside the solar atmosphere which is released through the process of a sudden flash of brightness on the sun’s surface. The magnetic energy built up is released from the corona of the sun in the form of radiation across the whole electromagnetic. [10] For a solar flare to take place it requires an incredible 6 × 1025 Joules which is over 25,000 times more energy than that released throughout the impact of the Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet which separated into 21 fragments with the first colliding with planet Jupiter on the 16 July 1994. [11] Solar flares can often coincide with Coronal Mass Ejections (CME) however they don’t always. [1] What causes Solar Flare?…
