Throughout F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby, symbolism is used to deliver different themes and ideas to the audience. One of the most significant symbols in this book was the green light across the bay that Gatsby is first seen staring into at the beginning of the story. Readers of The Great Gatsby will recognize the green light as representing a kind of hope for Gatsby. Fitzgerald characterizes Gatsby as being an idealist, who has dreamed of a fantastical life for himself full of wealth and esteem. No matter how extravagant Gatsby’s character may seem, he is a very relatable character in the way that everyone has their own green light.
