Synthesis Essay: Should People Live A Normal Life?

Improved Essays
In today's society, there has been a standard set to live a normal life. People expect high schoolers to continue on to college, get a high paying job after graduating, then marry and have a family. This normal life is a very high standard for some people, and for them to be expected to do that may lead them to depression or hopelessness. Unintentionally, society has formed the perfect life for someone to live, making others push towards this goal, which they may not be able to achieve. It is important to live your own life, and not give in to what society thinks someone should be. Citizens should live their own lives, and strive to become who, or what they want to be, and not worry about what other people expect of them, or how they should …show more content…
Sheff says "But the truth was that I fully expected him to go to college. Of course he would. It was never questioned. I pictured him in a satisfying job, with a loving relationship, and eventually with children of his own."(195) Scheff was convinced that his son would live this normal life that everyone expects people to live out, although this wasn't the case for Nic. Nic knew of the normal life, and how normal kids had parents that were soul mates who stayed together till they died. Because Scheff and his wife divorced, this may have caused Nic to have traumatically exhausting issues, driving him to his addiction. He knew that he wasn't living the normal life people expected him to subsist, people thought that since his parents were divorced, that he had lots of family troubles and that he wasn't normal. Scheff knew since he had a divorce, that Nic would be affected in a negative way most likely, but didn't expect him to cultivate such an dependence on crystal meth. The normal life clouded Scheffs understanding of his sons situation for what it really was. He truly believed that Nic would not steer from this path, even though he had to go through troubles of seeing both of his parents. David was so absorbed on believing his son would live a normal life, that he overlooked the possibility of his son veering off this path, and developing his own. Nic ended up doing just this, causing both himself, and his whole family enormous amounts of psychological pain. Social norms drove Nic to the conclusion that he wasn't living a good life because of his parents' divorce. He never fully developed his own character, because he was too busy thinking of what other people thought of

There will always be the conflict between society and the individual. Society attempts to conform the masses into an ideologically homogenous group which alienates those who do not share the same ideas, while the individual struggles to stay true to themselves and their values yet still be a member of the community around them. In a utopian world there would be middle ground where the individual is allowed to be themselves and where society can conform everyone to allow there to be peace while not trying to suppress personal rights. However in the real world and in community described in The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier this utopian is not the case as Jerry Renault quickly finds out that when an individual defies the norm in society…

There is a variety of important life lessons for the reader to learn from the book Tuesdays with Morrie, written by Mitch Albom. Of the many meaningful aphorisms Morrie Schwartz taught Mitch, there is one in particular that I feel I can relate to on a personal level. It reads: “so many people walk around with a meaningless life. They seem half-asleep, even when they're busy doing things they think are important. This is because they're chasing the wrong things.…

Reading his memoir, one comes to appreciate that government agencies have failed to manage the war on drugs effectively. In my opinion, Sheff should have made his intention clear about hiring an attorney to sue the government for failing to curb the proliferation of meth in the streets, and thus destroying the lives of youngsters. Even then, I disagree with the fact that Sheff can wholly blame himself and not his son for the drug addiction. As a mature person in the university, Nic should have been able to understand the addictive nature of meth and resisted any temptation to overindulge. Therefore, I believe that Sheff is refusing to accept the reality that Nic takes a significant blame for his own addiction.…

    1) Use my desk lamp for lighting more over the standard dorm lightning since I have a LED bulb in it and gives off ample brightness. -LED bulbs are by far more efficient than fluorescents since they give off more light than heat. These bulbs also seem to be much brighter and I find myself not being strained when I use it as a sole light source. Since my dorm room is already hot, it only seems smarter to use a light source that does not give off a ton of heat as well. Since I live in a single this seems like a viable solution since my room is very small and the desk light gives off sufficient light to illuminate the space.…

Whether we like it or not society has taken a huge role in our daily lives. We might not notice it, but it does, in direct and indirect ways throughout our day. How you may ask? Margaret Drabble points out that, “Our desire to conform is greater than our respect for objective facts” which is something that I fully agree on. In other words, I believe that we all as humans want to be like everyone else, even when reality suggests that we shouldn't or we aren't like other people in society.…

When I calculated my energy balance I found that I am in “energy equilibrium”, meaning that I take in enough calories, in accordance with exercising to burn off calories, to maintain my current body weight. However, my energy balance was 499 kcals, and after 500 kcals in excess one begins to gain weight. Since I am on the border of weight gain, to continue to keep my weight where it is now I could take in a few fewer calories or add more exercise to my daily life. My total carbohydrate intake is 52.59% of my daily calories.…
