To begin one type of author's craft Poe uses to create suspense is hyperbole's. A hyperbole is a type of figurative language that is an exaggerated statement or claim not meant to be taken literally.One example of a hyperbole in the story is when the author states in paragraph one “I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard many things in hell” and in paragraph two the authors states “...my blood ran cold”. These show examples of hyperbole's because it shows an extreme exaggeration that creates suspense and drama for the story. This helps the reader know the very strong feelings that the main character felt throughout the plot of the story.

Interior monologue is when a authors expresses a character's inner thoughts in a story. In the short story the author says” Almighty God!--no, no! they heard!--they knew!--they were making a mockery of my horror!...” and “I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever.” This shows an example of interior monologue being used to build suspense because it uses a character's inner thoughts to make the reader think about what's happening in the story. Along with interior monologue Poe uses other types of author's craft to create suspense in the story.
