In Poe’s The Black Cat the narrator, and main character, states his desire to “unburden” his “soul” before he is to be executed (435). The narrator informs the reader that he knows the story he is about to tell is “most wild” and because of this he does not “expect nor solicit belief” (Poe 435). The narrator is lying about his desire or as Amper points out, “His tale is a fabrication, by which he seeks to conceal the true nature of his crime, exactly as he sought in walling up his wife’s body to conceal the fact of the crime” (475). However, Amper’s belief that the narrator’s lie is simply to cover his crime is too simplistic a view.…

This shows an important setting in “The Black Cat” while also setting a mood of fear. The narrator in “The Black Cat” also uses feeling over reason while making choices. This causes him to make many bad decisions. “Because I knew that it had loved me, and because I felt it had given me no reason of offense; - hung it because I knew that in so doing I was committing a sin - a deadly sin that would so jeopardize my immortal soul” (Poe 2). This crazy act shows the reader just how insane the narrator is.…

Poe creates a dark mood on his short story “Black Cat”. Poe uses a cold hearted tone when he talks about killing the cat and his wife. It is cold hearted because he does not hesitate once while writing such cruel things. The narrator of the short story says “hung it because I knew that in so doing I was committing a sin”(110) to prove that he could do absolutely anything he wanted. Despite knowing how harmful…

Out of all of Edgar Allan Poe’s stories I believe “The Black Cat” is one of his most powerful writings. Poe wrote this interesting story in a way that is open to more than one interpretation. When the narrator tells of how the reoccurrences the have “terrified” him he tries to remind the reader that "... some intellect more calm, more logical, and far less excitable than own," will see that these scares are nothing more than natural occurrences . When the narrator starts the story, we see that the personality of the man has changed, which he gives credit to his abuse of alcohol .…

Thus, this is the first part as to how Pluto outsmarts the storyteller. Nevertheless, there was another cat who had his eye cut off and a white splotch on his body. Based on this, the audience can infer Pluto did not actually die and he has come back to haunt the main character. Furthermore, he followed the narrator around so he can live with him again. By doing this, the killing and the “death” of Pluto haunts the storyteller and makes him become a maniac.…

“Alone” is a poem, written by Edgar Allan Poe, about the loneliness of a child's life, which can be devolved using the theme and mood of the poem. First of all, the theme, or main idea, of the poem is loneliness, for example the poem states, “and all I lov'd -- I lov'd alone” (8). The main point that the poem is trying to get across it how lonely the life of the narrator’s childhood was. This is a good representation of loneliness, because the author gives an example of what the narrator had to do alone, painting a clear picture in the reader's mind and setting a mood. Second of all, the poem claims, “my sorrow -- I could not awaken my heart to joy at the same tone,” making the reader feel the emotions of sadness and sorrow, creating the mood…

The Black Cat by Edgar Allan Poe is a strong evident explanation of literature formed in a Gothic Style. A key feature of this genre that was displayed in the short story, is the narrator exploring moral questions. During the story after the narrator had tormented the cat, taking his eye out, he suffers from more intense and dangerous thoughts that makes him question law ‘Have we not a perpetual inclination, in the teeth of our best judgment, to violate that which is Law, merely because we understand it to be such?’ This quote represents the narrator experiencing rhetorical questions, he questions that even though we know deep down that something is so terribly incorrect we still go in the act of doing it again, repeating sickening actions.…

Demons; Wretched beasts from the pits of Hell ordered to serve Satan. We all have demons residing inside us and they can be awakened at any moment either through traumatic events or by the demon in the bottle, alcohol. Throughout his life, poet Edgar Allan Poe struggled with alcoholism and this is apparent throughout his short stories and poem. Most noteably his short story, The Black Cat, where the narrators actions are influenced by the demon in the bottle or perhaps influenced by the animal that story is titled after, the black cat that haunts him.…

“The Black Cat”s narrator’s madness is instant and wild, unlike the narrator of “The Tell-Tale Heart”, who is meticulous and cautious about his planning. The narrator of “The Tell-Tale Heart” had planned the murder for a week before following through (“The Tell-Tale Heart” 81). The two narrators may both be crazy, but it is not in the same way. Even though the narrators are not exactly alike, they do have things in common with themselves and with other narrators in Edgar Allan Poe’s…

In the story, the narrator tortures and ultimately hangs his favorite cat, Pluto. He says he “hung it because I knew it had loved me and because I felt it had given me no reason of offence; hung it because I knew that in doing so I was committing a sin…” (Poe 532). This was definitely an irrational decision. When he finds a new cat for him and his wife, the narrator kills his wife with an ax to the head for attempting to protect the cat from his harm.…
