To celebrate, citizens start at their local Catholic churches and then go to the streets, have an open-air party, then parade to the ocean. Once there, they walk in and fall backward into the water at midnight twelve times. This ritual is supposed to bring them good luck. San Juan Bautista Day is rooted in the Catholic religion, celebrating the patron Saint James who led the Catholic Army of Spain to fight against the Moors, pagans, who didn’t believe in God. During the parade some people put on masks to represent the Moors who Saint James defeated. These masks are called vejigante. It is celebrated on January 6th. The celebration is a lot like our Christmas. The children receive gifts just like the three kings brought to baby Jesus. The children put a shoe box full of grass clippings under the bed for the camels to eat that the three kings rode on. A special meal is eaten on this day. This is similar to our Christmas. One reason is because it is celebrating the birth of baby Jesus. Another is that we put out milk and cookies for Santa (the person who delivers our gifts) like they put out grass clippings for the three kings who bring theirs. Lastly, our children receive gifts just like the children in Puerto Rico.
