This novel expresses white supremacy all throughout its contexts. Lucas Beauchamp is a mixed adult male who was falsely accused for the murder of a white man. During this time in society judgements of the mixed population were high resulting in unfair treatment, blacks were guilty until proven innocent. Throughout the novel Lucas exemplifies grace and dignity by not lowering himself to the standards white supremacy has set. This decade and the next few to come mark the beginning of he Cilivil Rights Movement when society had to choose between his moral responsibility to his fellow man or conforming to the unrealistic and unethical practices society had adapted. The Cilvil Rights Movement officially began in the 1950’s meaning the time period this work of literature takes place in is setting the stage for the movement.
