The goal of Dr. H. Norman Wright’s book The Complete Guide to Crisis and Trauma Counseling (2011) is to give counselors and helping professionals techniques that they can use when working with individuals in crisis. Dr. H. Norman Wright teaches us how to integrate biblical viewpoint when assisting individuals in crisis. Individuals struggling with a crisis sometimes does not see the light at the end of the tunnel. It is the crisis counselors job to walk them through the process and show them the way. The book tells us that the best way a counselor can help ones in crisis is to lead by example and show them the light of God. Dr. H. H. Norman Wright (2011) uses his own experiences to help the readers relate and gain the information he is trying to share. He tells us that we will all go through some sort of crisis in our life times and some of us more than once, this is why he stress the importance of us being prepared to handle it when it does come. It's a hard pill to swallow knowing that we and our loved ones will go through trauma but this is why we all have to be prepared to handle it when the time comes. This book reminds the readers that a crisis can happen at any time. Dr. H. H. Norman Wright’s book taught me how to better prepare myself for when a crisis occurs. He teaches us about many different types of crisis from the crisis of death to the crisis of children. Dr. Wright (2011) teaches his readers how and when to integrate spirituality and religion when counseling someone in crisis. This helped me a great deal. As a counselor I have always felt uneasy when wanting to introduce spirituality and religion into my counseling setting. I also enjoyed reading his thoughts regarding allowing the individual to speak and you being silent. This goes along with active and mindful listening. We have to be in the moment with the individuals we are helping if we want to truly help them. This is something that I am constantly working on and trying to improve.
I wish Dr. Wright would have touched on the crisis of suicide in relation to adolescents more. Counseling adolescents is very different then counseling adults and I would have liked to learn more on how to help them through the crisis of suicide. We all know that cyberbullying is a major factor to teenage and adolescent suicide due to all of the social media outlets. Dr. Wright (2011) did discuss with his readers on how to help individuals thinking of committing suicide. However, I wish that he would have touched on how to handle suicide and suicidal ideations when dealing with
