Violence between partners is usually a crime against females. Young women between 16 and 24 years of age are more likely to assaulted by their partners. Statistics show that African American women are more likely to experience domestic violence in their early twenties but older than that the numbers are the same as white females. Also the women who are more at risk for domestic violence are those who leave their partners, than those who are divorced from their partners. More often these types happen before the physical abuse begins. Verbal and nonverbal abuse can include threatening to harm the person or their property, intimidating your partner, instilling fear, yelling, name-calling, harassing, breaking down the person 's psyche by telling them they are worthless and and alone. Though this type of abuse is wrong and is seen usually often by the the family or friends around the couple, it is not illegal. Not in the sense that a husband can be arrested and put in jail for yelling at his wife. Unless the abused partner takes the steps to get a restraining order to have a legal way to keep their abusing partner away from them.
