France was in a deep financial crisis and the people were unsure of what was to come. Louis XVI didn’t know what to do so he called for the Meeting of the Estates General to be held at the Palace of Versailles. King Louis XVI wanted all of the estates to prepare and write down any problem with the law such as fairer taxes or freedom of the press so they could discuss it at the meeting. All of the little steps such as: fighting for an equal voting system to writing a more fair constitution all heavily influenced the rise of democracy and the downfall of a monarchy. The most important idea that all of these smaller ideas led up to is Napoleon’s idea of Nationalism. Nationalism is the base of a democracy, allowing people to revolt against unjust leaders and preaching the idea that everyone is equal. Nationalism can be summed up into three words, equality, liberty, and fraternity.
