Overall, Fall Semesters Freshman Engineering course, Engineering Graphics and Design 110 deals with the scientific process, which is a highly concentrated methodology focusing on the five-step Engineering Design Process. The five-step Engineering Design Process has been constructed to provide a rigorous, repeatable, formal scientific methodology to engineering problems. These steps are as follows: Define the Problem, Gather Information, Generate Multiple Solutions, Analyze and Select a Solution, and Test and Implement the Solution.

Engineering Design Process in Context:
“Ligaments play an important role in stabilizing and balancing knee joint movement. Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries remain a challenge in clinical and experimental settings due to the poor healing potential of ACL injuries.” This introductory sentence, found in the Abstract, sums up the first step of the design process: Defining the Problem. This defines the need for a quicker, more reliable solution to fixing damaged ACLs, instead of the high failure rate commonly seen.
“Recent studies have reported that growth factors can improve patient outcomes after the surgical repair of ACL injuries. Growth factors have been tested for orthopedic treatments such as fracture management, spinal fusion and tendon and ligament healing. Growth factors, such as transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) [10], platelet derived growth factor (PDGF) [11] and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) [12], show the most promising results for healing ACL injuries [13].
