Dystopian novels and series is the type of fiction that interests many readers today, such as The Giver, by Lois Lowry. In this story, Jonas, the protagonist and narrator, is living in an orderly community in the future that runs on a strict set of rules. The book was published in 1993, and like any great book a film adaptation was filmed, and released about a year ago. Like any book and its film adaptation, there are some differences. In The Giver, some major differences included the age of graduation, the jobs of Asher and Fiona, who were Jonas’ best friends, and the endings of the story. In the book, Jonas plans to leave the borders of the community and travel past the final border of his world. If he does that he releases all the memories of the past that he has received. So, Jonas tries to receive all the memories he can from the Giver. But he faces an obstacle that makes him leave early. Gabriel, an infant, is kept in his dwelling because of his slow development. All babies are kept in the Nurturing Center, but Gabriel makes a racket during the night so Jonas’ family decides to have him temporarily for some time. Jonas transmits happy memories to him to keep him calm throughout the nights, and Jonas gets attached to him. One day his father tells him that Gabriel is going to be released the next day, which results in death, because of his slow development. That causes Jonas to sneak them both out of the community that night and many people think that he had fell into the River, which is very dangerous. Drones are sent to look for him, but he still crosses the border at the end. Whereas in the movie, the ending is more dramatic. The night Jonas escapes, Gabriel is in the Nurturing Center. Fiona helps him get Gabriel, because that is where she works in the movie. He uses guard motorcycles to escape the community. Drones are sent to find Jonas.
