heavily dominated by men who value women for their physical appearances rather than their

As Esperanza grows during the book, she experiences a series of awakenings. At the

House on Mango Street, she knows she has become more isolated from her home through her
writing. She says, “I write it down and Mango says goodbye sometimes. She does not hold me
with both arms. She sets me free.” Although she has not yet found a home of her own, her
writing has helped her to find privacy within herself.
With her story of success through hard work and her dedication to fulfilling her goal,
Esperanza serves as a powerful role model for many young women today. By the end of the
