Should Students Have Cell Phones During Classes

Some schools have strict policies about cellular phones being used during class or even at school in general. The reason behind these strict policies is because it is causing students to be less attentive. Students cannot learn properly if their technological device is within reach and easily accessible during class hours. While their time and main focus is supposed to be on school work and participating in class discussions, their attention is being drawn to their phones. Some teachers would agree that texting and a phone ringing during class is a major disruption to students because it takes a great deal of time away from an important lecture. A study done by Tindell & Bohlander (2012) stated “about 40% of the students indicated that they used their phones during class, and this activity caused a distraction for about 85% of the students” (p. 2). A student’s academic performance is important at school but can by jeopardized by small distractions that mobile devices have stored, for instance, entertainment uses and constant notifications from text messages to social media. This decreases student’s ability to excel academically, such as not being able to practice good studying skills or trying to improve grades.
In a class room environment, students main focus should be on the class lecture and teacher and not on any disruptive material.
Although some schools are against the idea of having cell phones during class sessions, students may be able to make use of their phone by using it as a tool to stay productive with class assignments.
