This is a very particular classroom in that each students needs are addressed much closer than in an inclusion classroom. While the self-contained classroom does try to keep with routine and form of a general education class there are modifications that are in place based on the children’s unique delays and disorders. A major difference that goes along with the attention to the children is in the type of communication I saw used. The charts in the classroom I observed detailed what was accomplished, how they did or reacted to activities, and the personal attention to emotional and physical needs. When possible instruction was given in the student’s own classroom, but many times instruction would be given in the resource room where focus issues could be addressed and multiple students from different classes but similar lessons could be combined. A disadvantage of this style is the seclusion from the student’s class and the teachings they may miss from the general education classroom. It is not considered the least restrictive but does have its advantage in concentrations. I did notice in my observations that the resource teacher did take into account the current lesson from the general education teacher to keep her students in similar units. For some families, this can seem like a fix all solution, but in actuality it is a work in progress as lessons and instructions are tailored to specific needs for the child’s specific delay and may not regard other setbacks the specific delay may have
