Media Literacy

For today, we live in a post-industrial society, a defining characteristic of which is a constant and increasing flow of information. The spread of the Internet and information technology (laptops, mobile phones, Wi-fi) influenced the formation of social ties in human society, changing ethical standards and, in some cases, values system. In this regard, the person needs to develop new skills, improving the ability to filter information, share it and learn. User needs some basis, a skill that will be the determining factor in the system of his relations in informational society. That is when I first learned about the media literacy. This issue was very important for me because I noticed a surprising number of negative, shared in the Web. While watching videos on YouTube or reading news on the social networks, person face with a huge number of illiteracy messages and that is only the tip of the iceberg. I saw a huge problem of people`s dependence on the same information that they read on the web. For example, when I distribute internet meme or post with personal information, I often stick to unwritten rules about how the pictures should look and what is the best way to write about my personal life. The fact that the dissemination of information, open access to other participants of information relations promotes media images, which do not reflect real life and the real us. Creation of media images entails some responsibility because people stand out from the crowd of users and show an example for other people, creating their own media image, which then affects the relationships with people in real life. It must be remembered that we always have a choice what to share - personal thoughts or somebody`s idea. The fact of sharing popular thought (or even way of thinking) create templates of thinking. This tendency can be seen through the celebrities` photos, videos, thoughts that negatively affect the ordinary users’ life. It is necessary to admit that I enjoyed popular patterns of behavior recently. Fortunately, I understood that each person is unique and should act according to his or her own goals, own values. The networking should develop pluralism, not uniformity, biases and stereotypes.
