America is losing its competitive edge in math education; we are now the 32nd nation in the world in terms of math education. Only 40% of children in the fourth grade are even considered proficient in this area of study; only 35% of 8th graders are considered proficient or above proficient. Not only are science, technology, engineering, and math teachers scarce, but out of the ones that are practicing, few have the resources to inspire students to pursue the STEM field, or even apply the knowledge. However, this is not the only issue. Women and minorities are groups that are simply not identifiable within the STEM field. There are many stakeholders in this matter such as teachers, students, and philanthropies, but the most prominent stakeholder …show more content…
The lack of minorities in STEM fields leads to racial and gender income disparities within STEM. He comments that there is an undersupply of these minorities in general, which makes the discrimination in the fields able to continue. Minorities and women are being hired slower than their white male counter parts which leads to discouragement, then lack of enrollment. In order for more minority and women participation in STEM fields, Bamidele iterates that people must be recruited, and they must have support so that they will graduate. It is stressed that institutions must give incentives for the students. Women and minorities must decide that the STEM education is worth it. It will be especially useful to address one of the underlying causes of the STEM crisis, teacher education. In regards to teacher education, it provides insight on what teaching programs are effective for the educators, and it demonstrates the pros of STEM Thinking for educators. Reeve’s experience as a teacher educator for more than 26 years, his collaborative efforts with various governments on teacher education in technology and engineering has been awarded three Fulbright awards, and his PhD in Education add to his credibility as a source.
