Ocean pollution has been growing outrageously over the years “Recently, the dead zone has been roughly the same size as US states of Connecticut or New Jersey, and between 2008 and 2011 has grown as large as 17,348 sq. km (Jamail). There is 407 dead zones that cover 250,000 sq. km of the globe. This is leading to fisheries closing down, or having to go father out into the ocean to find fish since the dead zones are taking away the oxygen so fish don’t survive. The second largest dead zone is located in the Gulf of Mexico and was discovered in the 1980’s by Dr Nancy Rabalais a marine scientist. Dr Rabalais has been observing this dead zone yearly since she first found it when it was only 9,774 sq. km, but since then it has grown along with the other dead zones.
