Progress is the process known as a gradual improvement throughout time. The idea of progress can be defined as an improvement, a development or a change. It is an advancement that contributes to making the world a better place. But does it always? Our society has alienated itself from the reality of the way things are supposed to be, through the misuse of progress. Although the latter seems to have made life simpler and more comfortable, it has in reality destroyed its nature. Progress has made our world smaller and the universe larger. It has helped humankind understand the world and its surroundings, and has proven to be useful by facilitating its lifestyle. In his essay "Five Facets of a Myth" Kirkpatrick Sale refers to the "Myth of Progress" to challenge the Idea of Progress and how it is inevitable. He explains how progress "promoted the idea of regular and eternal improvement of the human condition" (565) when in reality humans follow the economy blindly, thinking that it would dramatically improve their quality of life. He discusses the advancement of propaganda and how economic progress is tearing people more and more apart, increasing social inequalities. Allen D. Kanner treats progress in "Technological wisdom" and explains how he "shifts from technological progress to technological wisdom". He cites different examples of this phenomenon and shares his thoughts about its disadvantages. The purpose of scientific research is to discover and describe the details of the universe. But then again scientific does not necessarily mean correct, valid, or best. Its advancements have made it possible for us to explore about the world and has increased our standards of living. Research and experiments are an ongoing process that has always existed aiming at ameliorating people's health and lives. Medical research and development can have influential impact on people's lives and has shown to be very effective. It has cured diseases and improved lives. Nowadays life expectancy is around seventy-five years when a couple of years ago it was only sixty-nine. People are now taking simple precautions that are saving millions of lives, for example vaccination, annual checkups, having a medicine cabinet at home, being careful and avoiding risks such as sunburns, eating unhealthily etc… Small changes in human's daily habits have enriched lives every way.
