For instance, if I lost a loved one this is out of my control. I cannot take action to change the problem but I can cope with my sad feelings. By talking to friends and family for advice to handle how I’m feeling they probably have experienced of losing a loved one and could sympathize with me and maybe suggest things to do to cope with the sadness. Distracting myself with other things to do to keep my mind off the problem is effective because it is one strategy in emotion-focus coping. “Emotion-focused coping involves trying to reduce the negative emotional responses associated with stress...” (Saul Mcleod, “Emotion Focused Coping,” 2009). If my stressful situation is uncontrollable then I will use emotion focus coping technique by distracting myself from the problem. I get myself busy to avoid the problem because if I think about that problem I will dwell on it and blame myself for it. The emotion-focused coping and avoidant coping strategies for me work best when the situation is where I had no control over. When I used it for situations where I had some control over with was not effective because I got nothing done if I had to do things that were due or had to do. Also, avoiding some problems will not fix itself because the problem is still there. Emotion-focused coping works best for me when I have no control over because if I keep myself busy I will not dwell on the problem if I have not control over it and I will feel a bit better about myself.
I found problem-focused coping in situations where I had some control over works best because I’m solving the problem and it is solve in the long run. For instance, if I have homework due in week I would start off with it right away rather than avoiding it until the last minute.
