Essay Against Common Core State Standards

The issue over the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) has increased significantly over the past few years. The CCSS are the set of shared goals and expectations for the knowledge and skills students need to master in English language arts and mathematics. This is required at each grade level so they can be prepared to succeed in college, career, and life. The problem isn’t primarily what is in these standards or what’s been left out, although that’s certainly an issue. The main focus is the role the Common Core State Standards are playing in the larger dynamics of current school reform and education politics. On one hand, those for the CCSS argue that it is geared toward college and career readiness. They believe the standards will help students become more prepared to be active members of society. Those against the CCSS insist that schools are only implementing the standards because it is a program pushed by the government, states must accept the standards or receive no money. They believe the CCSS is hurting are already failing education system and overlooking the student’s unique needs, creativity, and diversity.

Kirp for The New York Times gives the reader a different perspective, the stance against the CCSS. The article discusses more negativity than the previous. Kirp examines the four states that once adopted the CCSS and now have opted out, he then states that many Republican governors who initially backed the standards now refer to them as “shameless government overreach.” His findings suggest that too much testing can rob school buildings of joy and cause unnecessary stress. The article seems to lean with a bias towards supporting the educational institutes that do not favor the Common Core State
