Rick Busselle, Assistant Professor of School of Communication at Washington State University, expresses in his article, “Television Viewing, and Perceptions about Race, “Historically in family centered shows, African Americans have been portrayed as less educated, from broken homes, and possessing lower status jobs than white” (3). Our perception of African Americans is going to be that they are less educated because that is what the television is portraying them as. Television continues to affect our perception of ethnicity everyday. Research analyst Nazgol Ghandnoosh explains, “Television news programs over-represent racial minorities as crime suspects and whites as crime victims. Black and Latino suspects are also more likely than whites to be presented in a non-individualized and threatening way — unnamed and in policy custody […].” Our perception of racial minorities is going to be that they are crime suspects on television because that is what they are portraying them as. On television, what we see is what we believe resulting in a false sense of racist beliefs, and acts. For example, Dana Mastro, Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Caifornia, Santa Barbara expresses, “Although images of Blacks in primetime entertainment television has improved over the decades, this is not the case when it comes to their representation in print and television news where they are commonly depicted as violent and menacing criminals.” Whites are dominant in society because of the stereotype they are given, versus African Americans where they are stereotyped as criminals as Mastro had stated above. There are different groups of ethnicities that are represented differently on television, and often portrayed as people whom they may not really be. Although, society would like to see quicker and significant changes in these industries, patience is a virtue in this situation regarding up-and- change.
