She lies to almost every character in the entire play. She lies first to Parris, telling him that, “We did dance, uncle, and when you leaped out of the bush so suddenly, Betty was frightened and then she fainted. And there’s the whole of it.” (pg. 10) Abigail also says, “But we never conjured spirits.” (pg. 10) The truth is that they did try to conjure spirits, and Abigail went so far as to drink chicken blood. Once Parris leaves the room, Betty says, “You drank blood, Abby! You didn’t tell him that!” (pg. 19) She also says, “You did, you did! You drank a charm to kill John Proctor’s wife!” (pg.19) Betty knows that what they did was wrong, and she knows that Abby is still sinning by lying to Parris. Abby gets angry. She doesn’t want anyone to know what her malicious scheme is. She threatens all of the girls that she will “bring a pointy reckoning” to them one night if any of them breathe another word again. A little later, Parris and Hale ask Abigail what’s in the kettle that Parris sees in the grass the night they danced. Abigail replies saying “That were only soup.” (pg. 42) She is then asked what kind of soup. She stuffs as much money as she can into her bag, Mercy telling her to hurry up. They run into the woods together, where it all started, and disappear, never to be heard from again. Abigail makes many mistakes in the play, The Crucible, but some may wonder if she truly does warrant the way things turn out in the end. Abigail may be young and stupid, but she deserves the entire blame and even more for the way things turn out in the end.
