Friends always have each other's backs, even when it may be hard. Through their trials they have to work together, even when it seems everyone is against them. For example, Piper’s dad is abducted and used to manipulate her. On page 51, the abductor says “You’ll betray them for us the voice said Or you’ll lose everything” Even when Piper’s father is abducted by the enemy, she remains loyal. Her father is the only family she has, so Piper took a huge gamble. Piper decided that she wouldn’t betray her friends, and continued the quest with them. Not many people would take a risk like that to uphold the trust between friends. Later on in the story, Leo, Jason, and Piper crash their transportation in Detroit. While Leo is fixing it, a face forms in the snow and tells him to give up his quest. When Leo tells Piper and Jason about this, he says, “ ‘She wanted me to betray you guys, and I was like, ‘Pfft, right, I’m going to listen to the face in the potty sludge’” (Page 276) even though Leo …show more content…
Towards the beginning of the book, Leo and Piper feel useless. They didn’t get any training and felt unprepared. When they crashed outside of Detroit, Leo partly blamed himself.
