While Poe does not go into too much detail with his imagery ,the way he used it still provided a great deal of suspense ,for example at one point in the story ,when Montresor,who served as the narrator for the story ,says that”It was in vain that Fortunato ,uplifting his dull torch,endeavored to pry into the depth of the recess.Its termination the feeble light did not enable us to see.”the reader doesn’t know if anything dangerous could pop out of the shadows,therefore providing a moment of suspense and uncertainty .Another great example of suspense in the story was when Montresor said”A succession of loud and shrill screams,bursting suddenly from the throat of the chained form ,seemed to thrust me violently back.’’ at that moment,the reader has no idea what it was was that was seemingly attacking Montresor ,but while that does provide great suspense,that moment is the extent of the suspense in the novel.The main reason Connell’s usage of imagery to provide suspense is better and more effective,is due to the fact that he uses it throughout the entirety of “The Most Dangerous Game”,like during one point in the story ,Not long after Rainsford begins playing Zaroff’s “game” Rainsford is being chased by Zaroff ,when eventually he climbs up a tree to hide,when Zaroff catches up to him he searches around the tree ,but then he blows some smoke from his cigar up upwards,implying that Zaroff knows that he’s up there,but never letting the reader know whether or not Zaroff really
